These figures are one of the first self-portrait sculptures. They were done as response to a problem  of how to use bronze as a material for contemporary sculpture. They mimic the poses of famous, heroic sculptures from the past, engaging with the history of art as well as bringing these monumental precedents into a more human scale. They were painted with enamel paint which is a very un-classical approach to using bronze.
